Empower Erie discusses tuition, financing community college

Empower Erie discussed plans for the Erie County Community College at the Blasco Memorial Library Monday.

The public forum with a seven-member panel gave an overview of the 54-page proposal released on Saturday, which details the first-five year projects for enrollment and finances.

The plan calls for establishing a main campus in the city of Erie with the potential for several satellite campuses across the county in existing buildings. The college would also have a special training facility.

First-year enrollment could exceed 1,500 and increase by nearly 1,000 by the fifth year.

Empower Erie said the college could be established without raising taxes.

The plan must be reviewed by the Erie County Council and Pennsylvania Department of Education. If approved, the first classes could be offered in 2019.
